Answers about water damage, mold, and the restoration process in Central Florida.
Independent restoration professionals connected through Connect Flood are typically available for same-day or next-day response across Central Florida. For active water damage, call (407) 634-9901 immediately — the faster a dry-out begins, the less secondary damage and potential mold growth occurs.
Stop the water source if it is safe to do so. Turn off electricity to affected areas. Take photos of all affected areas before moving anything. Move valuables, documents, and electronics to a dry location. Do not run household fans before professional drying equipment arrives — fans can spread moisture and airborne mold spores. Then call (407) 634-9901 for emergency response. See our full water damage checklist.
Mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours of untreated moisture, particularly in Florida's humid climate. Once established, mold can spread rapidly behind walls, under flooring, and inside HVAC systems. Professional drying equipment started within the first 24–48 hours is the most effective prevention. If mold is already visible, mold remediation by an independent professional is needed.
Most standard homeowner's policies cover sudden and accidental water damage, such as burst pipes, appliance overflows, and roof leaks. Damage from rising groundwater or storm flooding typically requires a separate flood insurance policy. Gradual damage caused by neglect may not be covered. Acting quickly, beginning mitigation, and documenting the loss thoroughly helps support your claim. Connect Flood is not an insurance company, public adjuster, or law firm. Category 1 (clean water) comes from a sanitary source such as a broken supply line. Category 2 (gray water) is contaminated water that may cause illness, such as washing machine or dishwasher overflow. Category 3 (black water) is grossly contaminated water containing pathogens, such as sewage backups or floodwater. Each category requires different safety protocols, PPE, and remediation. Category 3 contamination requires professional sewage cleanup.
A mold test can confirm the presence, species, and concentration of mold and is sometimes required by insurance adjusters. However, visible mold growth or a persistent musty odor after a water loss usually indicates professional remediation is needed regardless of test results. An independent professional can assess your situation during an on-site inspection. Learn more about mold remediation.
A standard structural dry-out typically takes 3 to 5 days with professional equipment, including LGR dehumidifiers and air movers. The timeline depends on saturation, materials affected, building configuration, and ambient humidity. Technicians take daily psychrometric readings to determine when materials have reached dry standard. Learn more about structural drying and emergency dry-out.
